How can I get my doctors to really understand my pain. They gave me oxycontin HCL 12 release; 10mg. It doesn't work. If I take 2 at once it helps control the pain better. I also take ultram 50mg 2 four times a day and that helps with the oxycontin. I also have oxycodone 5mg which I have been on for 7 years. Its non-effective. I tried to talk to them to up the 2 but they won't listen. I have kept a dairy, gave my doctors information, everything. I have FMS,CFS,chronic pain, osteoporsic and osteopenic. My L1 to L4 is 5 times of a spinal facture and they rest 2 times and I do take Forteo every day. The pain I have/get is painful so bad I can not get out of bed especially in the winter.
What can I do with out sounded like a drug addict?
I was in a bad car accident in 1994 . A snow plow t-boned my car and I was knocked out. I have many problems and the pain on some days are unbearable. If I sit and do nothing all day I am fine. But start house work, forget it.
Do you have any answers for me?
Thank you

ekulas,
The field of pain management anesthesiology has become excedingly cautious recently. if your doctor isn't helping you can find another doctor, however, that is seen as a red flag by doctors. Doctors want to develop a long term relationship and, in the field of pain management, they need to develop trust of the patient. In my practice I had patients complaining of being thrown out of their anesthesiologists practice and they didn't know why. I asked the anesthesiologist about it and he explained that pharmacies now send reports to doctors about other prescriptions that the patient is filling. These patients had been going to other doctors for the same medications.

So, unfortunately it has become your job to convinve your doctor that you are going along with the cautious approach he is taking and gradually convince him that it isn't working. The bottom line is that you will need other ways of dealing with the pain. Have you exhausted other methods such as acupuncture, massage, relaxation training, hypnosis, meditation, epsom salt baths?

I was in your situation a few years back. Pills, injections, more pills, more injections, and so on. I saw a pain management specialist for 4 months and had so many treatments, nothing worked. I too have severe osteoporosis and vertebral compression fractures, just finished 2 years of Forteo (if they told you it will help the pain, don't believe them). Finally my rheumatologist was so sick of seeing me in agony (my blood pressure was so high because of the pain) he told me to ask my pain doc for a Duragesic Patch to control my pain (it is a transdermal skin patch with fentanyl that lasts up to 3 days but realistically 2) When my pain doctor denied me the patch saying I was too young for something like that (it didn't matter that nothing else worked) I fired him and asked my rheumatologist if he could help. He sat me down, explained the issues with the patch, how to use it safely and prescribed it for me. I had to see him every month for assessment and a refill but it saved my life. Find a doctor that cares and stick with them, they will be your best defense against chronic pain.
